THOMASTON —  Come out Saturday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m. for a Finnish silent movie with subtitles accompanied by a live soundtrack at Thomaston Federated Church, 8 Hyler St.

This Finn-Am Society of Mid-Coast Maine and the Finnish Heritage House event features Finlandia Foundation National Performer of the Year Kent Washburn on the organ. He will perform his original soundtrack to the classic 1929 Finnish silent movie “Mustalaishurmaaja” (The Gypsy Charmer). He created the soundtrack from Finnish folk songs and classical music. The star of the movie, Teuvo Tulio, was Finland’s answer to Rudolph Valentino.

Washburn grew up in Ithaca, N.Y., where his mother (born in Finland) and his father were founding members of the Finger Lakes Finns. He began piano lessons at age 9 and organ studies at age 14, and participated in local Finnish music and dance activities. He went on to complete organ and music studies at Syracuse University.

A donation of $5 is requested. Coffee and pulla/nisu (Finnish coffee bread) will be served after the performance. For more information, call 207-975-1476.
