NEWPORT — The Oceanside football team went on the offensive in a significant way to start the regular season on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 3 as the Mariners trekked north to face Nokomis.

The Mariners rode to the high school game by bus, but continued their wild ride Saturday hitched to the bumper of running back Aiden Sergent, who put on an offensive clinic to the tune of six touchdowns as the visitors emerged with an exciting 60-41 win.

Sergent broke several long runs on the afternoon as he ran over, around and through Warrior defenders and finished the day with 228 yards on the ground on 17 attempts with five touchdowns, while adding a sixth for good measure on a 75-yard kickoff return.

The Mariners led 6-0 after the first quarter, 42-21 at halftime and 42-34 after three quarters.

Cohen Galley also was impressive under center for Oceanside as he was 14-of-21 for 245 yards and three touchdowns.

Robert Blair (4 rushes for 46 yards) and Cohen Galley (8 rushes for 29 yards) chipped in on the ground for the visitors.

Through the air, Hale Morris (6 catches for 90 yards, TD), Zeb Foster (2 catches for 71 yards, 2 TDs), Maddox Robishaw (2 catches for 54 yards), Gavin Ripley (2 catches for 9 yards), Sergent (catch for 20 yards) and Blair (catch for yard) hauled in passes for the Mariners.

Ripley also had an interception at the goal line for Oceanside, which wiped out a potential Nokomis touchdown.

The Mariner defense was led by Sergent (2 solo tackles, 6 assisted tackles), Nate Thompson (4 solos, 5 assists, quarterback sack), Cohen Galley (5 solos, 3 assists), Blair (4 solos, 4 assists), Morris (5 solos, 5 assists), Ben Tripp (3 solos, 2 assists), Robishaw (8 solos, 4 assists), Ripley (6 solos, 5 assists, interception), Larry Robbins (2 solos), Foster (solo, 3 assists), Richie Whitamore (solo), Brady Proctor (assist), Tim Watts (assist), Matt Bodman (solo) and Chris Mills (assist).

Maddon White scored multiple touchdowns in the losing effort for Nokomis, while Seth Bowden also had a bevy of catches for the Warriors.
