BELFAST — There were plenty of strong runners in the “Bug Run” 5-kilometer race/walk on Saturday morning, Aug. 20, but the two with the fastest feet came from far away — one far, far away.

The popular event attracted 93 runners/walkers, with the youngest participant being age 7 and oldest 81.

Carl Hartford, 37, of Wilmington, Mass. blistered the 3.1-mile course — and field — with a winning time of 16 minutes and two seconds.

The runner-up was Brett Almasi, 42, of Dover-Foxcroft in 17:38.

The first female finisher was Melanie Walker, 34, of Laporte, Colo. as she finished 16th overall in 21:44. She lives 2,100 miles from Belfast.

The event was part of the larger 15th annual, Belfast Rotary-hosted Harbor Fest celebration, which took place Friday through Sunday, Aug. 19-21.

The free three-day celebration of the city’s maritime history and traditions also included the National Boatbuilding Challenge, harborside exhibit of water and outdoor adventure vessels and equipment, tours of the Front Street Shipyard, Come Boating!’s rowing regatta, blueberry pancake breakfast, boat gear swap, live music, food trucks, children’s activities and the popular Sunday morning Cardboard Boat Race.

The “Bug Run” earns its name due to the fact lobsters in Maine often are called bugs and the overall fastest male and female finishers in Saturday’s race received live lobsters for prizes. The event was sponsored by First National Bank and First National Wealth Management.
