ROCKPORT — Bill “Wilber” Roman Sr. passed away Monday, Aug. 1, 2022, after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis and ultimately cancer. He went on to his next “great adventure” from the Sussman House with his beloved wife, children, and Pepper at his side.

Born July 2, 1949, the third son of Ralph “Bud” Roman Sr. and Myra (Roman) Walker, Bill did many things in his life but may be best known as a self-employed scuba diver working the docks every day for whatever dive jobs he could muster up. Bill worked many years in hotel maintenance and most recently was employed at the Knox Nursing Home, always eager to help when needed and make new friends along the way. Bill was just as passionate about his hobbies, his favorite being flying, which had been a dream of his since he was very young. He reached his dream with a yellow T-Bird 1 and the start of a very special friendship with Steve and Debbie Morrison.

Bill’s greatest loves in life were, without question, his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. He devoted himself to his family and friends with all he had to give. Whether a friend, family or complete stranger, if you needed help, he was there for you. He was one of a kind and will be missed by many.

He was predeceased by both parents; his stepfather, George Walker; and his brother, Clifton “Kip” Roman.

Bill is survived by his wife of 30 years, Jean; brothers Ralph “Bud” Roman Jr. (Ingrid) and Jeff; and sister Carlene Steeves; four children from his first marriage, Myra Roman-Haskell, Bill Roman Jr. (Karen), Chris Roman (Kelly), Kathy Grinvalski (Jeff); grandchildren Myra McLure, Amanda Merritt, Loren Merritt, Brooke Macarthur, Sebastian Yattaw, Sabrina Roman, Nick Roman, Zac Roman, Kimberly Roman; great-grandchildren Phillip Reed, Timothy Robbins, Zoey Carfagno and Jasper Brooks; and many nieces and nephews.

We will honor Bill’s request not to have any services and to remember him with a smile, and maybe whistle a tune to brighten the day for someone else.
