The heat did not deter the crowds seeking blueberries and fun for Maine Wilde Blueberry Weekend. Area blueberry farms, Ridgeberry Farm in Appleton and Brodis Blueberries in Hope, opened their fields and doors on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 6 and 7, to the public.

At Brodis Blueberries people visiting were in for a treat, or several treats during the weekend. Brother Shuckers food truck was on site serving oysters, local seafood, and other goodies, while the Aldermere Achiever 4H Club grilled up Beltie Burgers. Blue Barren Distillery also served cocktails.

Both days in the blueberry fields, the famous children’s book, Blueberries for Sal was read. On Sunday, the Wyman’s Bee Mobile was atop the hill, with prizes for every child.

The store was open all weekend for those who wanted to purchase blueberries.

In Appleton, Ridgeberry Farm’s operation was a family affair. Owned and operated by John and Allison Boyington for over 40 years, the farm was buzzing with customers locally and out-of-state.

Multiple vendors, either family or family friends, were setup selling t-shirts, honey products, homemade baked goods, goatmilk soap, and kettle corn, while BBQ was served during the lunch hours. Hay rides were also offered to take people around the fields to see the crop.

Tim Davis, the son-in-law of the Boyington’s, organized most of the event.

“A lot of it is friends and family,” Davis said.

Davis said the 2021 turnout was “way more than expected” and had “close to 1,000 people.”

Friends and family were not just selling products and the little blue fruit, as Davis’ son, Jonathan Davis, and nephew, Aaron Smith, were out in the field collecting the blueberries on the tractor. Family friend Rebecca Johnson also helped ready a tractor to go out and collect the fruit.

John Boyington said the farm produces 350-500 thousand pounds of blueberries each year in a span of a few weeks.
