ROCKPORT — The Rockport Planning Board gave unanimous final approval, 4-0, to a North Atlantic Gymnastics Academy to be built along Route 1 at its meeting Thursday evening, Aug. 4.

The board was originally scheduled to vote on the building at its July 28 meeting but tabled the remainder of the meeting due to the long duration that night.

The building is to be built on a 19-acre parcel at 425 Commercial St. (Route 1). The building would be more than 16,000 square feet, according to the plans, and would be 20 feet tall. The project includes building a large parking lot.

The building was proposed by Jonas Contakos.

The only potential problem that arose when the building was first brought to the board in March was the size of the building allowed by the Land Use Ordinance.

The LUO did not clearly state a building over 10,000 square feet was allowed in that zone, but there was a vague reference to enclosed recreational facilities larger than that size.

Board Chair Joe Sternowski proposed an ordinance change that went to the town meeting for approval that clarified the language to allow the project, which was approved by voters.
