Merryspring Nature Center will offer Nature’s Tea Party, a workshop on growing garlic, a talk on owls and a family nightwalk during the month of August. Admission is free to all.

Friday, Aug. 12 at 10 a.m.
Merryspring will host a program called “Nature’s Tea Party” as part of its Free Family Fridays series. This program will show children and their families how to identify and safely harvest plants that can be used to make summer drinks. Guests will be able to sample a variety of different teas made from plants growing at Merryspring. This program is outdoors. Guests must wear weather-appropriate clothing, sturdy shoes, and be prepared to walk for one hour. In the event of rain, this program will be canceled. Preregistration is necessary for this event, with limited space available. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tuesday, Aug. 16 at noon — Retired Extension educator David Fuller will lead a presentation on growing garlic in Maine in an online webinar hosted by Merryspring Nature Center. Guests will learn about all aspects of successful garlic growing in Maine. Fuller will cover variety selection, choosing a site, when to plant and harvest, and some details about research findings from garlic grown in Maine. This class is suitable for both established and new growers of garlic. Fuller is a retired Agriculture Professional with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, who specialized in allium crops, including garlic. He is a lifelong gardener and learner. This talk is part of the Online Summer Talk series at Merryspring Nature Center. Access to a computer or smart device is required to attend. email info@merryspring.org to register for this program. Friday, Aug. 19 at 10 a.m. — In this final Free Family Friday of the summer, families are invited to Merryspring to learn about Maine’s native owls. After a short presentation about owl behavior and biology, guests will be able to open up owl pellets to discover mammal bones hiding inside. There are no live owls at this program. Preregistration is necessary for this event, with limited space available. Guests may sign up by contacting Merryspring at 236-2239 or info@merryspring.org. Friday, August 26 at 8 p.m. — Merryspring Nature Center will host a family Night Ecology Walk. On this guided walk, guests of all ages will learn about what happens at Merryspring after the sun goes down. Hooting owls, swooping bats, and twinkling constellations will all be on display on this free program. Along the way, guests will learn about what plants and animals do at night, scan for bats, and enjoy an evening walk at Merryspring after dark. Guests should bring their own flashlight, wear weather-appropriate clothing, and be prepared to walk for one hour. In the event of rain this event will be canceled. This program is part of the Free Family Programs series at Merryspring. Space is limited, with preregistration required.
