CAMDEN — Here in Midcoast, Maine, there are a lot of interests. Some people are into boating and like to see images of oars, while others like searching the forests for mushrooms.

Liberty Graphics in downtown Camden offers shirts that celebrate everything Maine from mushrooms to black flies to the local bat population.

“Unique is what we do,” said store manager Sue Chesser on July 13.

She said the store’s customers are looking for something out of the ordinary in a T-shirt or hat, something that matches their interests and personality. She acknowledges that the terms “hip” and “groovy” do indeed apply.

The business started in Camden at its present location at 13 Mechanic St. in May of 2021. It had previously been in the town as a “pop-up” store (or a store within a store) at the Maine Gathering. The new location used to be a book store.

These shirts, baby clothes, hats and other items are imprinted with Maine artwork using water-based ink that does not peal, crack or chip like other inks. They are made in 150 styles at the facility in Liberty, Maine in Waldo County. There is also a Portland store.

The business is an employee-owned cooperative. The Camden store has about six employees. Liberty Graphics employs about 50 statewide.

It also offers a selection of items from Maine artists.

Chesser said the mushrooms T-shirt (see photo) is one of the top sellers.
