ROME, N.Y. — Rachel Darby passed away peacefully, Tuesday, June 28, 2022, in Lake Isabella, Calif. She was 86 years old, but she would say she was living her 87th year!

Rae was the loving mother of Brian Darby, Kathy Darby, Karen Castaldi and her fiancé, Mike Vanatsky.

She cherished her three grandsons, Tommy, Darby and Dominick Castaldi and her granddaughter, Jessica Darby, who preceded her in death in 2020.

Rae loved family. She had three brothers, Richard, Robert and William Pouliot. She was preceded in death by Richard and Robert. She loved researching and sharing family genealogy with her nieces, Jackie, Linda and Marie and her nephews, Billy and Joey (who preceded her in death in 2011).

Rae was a military wife while married to Col. Robert Darby who travelled many states before settling in Beavercreek, Ohio. She was a self taught gourmet cook and all who had the pleasure of enjoying her food would agree. She was actively involved at St. Luke’s Catholic Church and was president of the officers wives club at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Her last job in Ohio was director of community events at Wright State University, which was a perfect fit for her. She loved planning things and meeting people. Rae never knew a stranger.

Rae loved to entertain and had many visitors while living in Rockland, Maine, which was located right on Rockland Harbor overlooking the Rockland lighthouse.

A private gathering will be held at a later date to grant her final wishes.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Rae’s name to BrightFocus Foundation for Macular Degeneration Research.

We all love you Rae! Rest in peace; you are now in the Lord’s arms.
