ROCKLAND — Penobscot Language School will host two dinner events in July with the details as follows:

Traditional Italian dinner

Penobscot Bay Language School celebrates spring with a Traditional Italian dinner Sunday July 17, 2022, at 5 p.m. This indoor/outdoor fundraiser will include a traditional Italian dinner prepared by former PBLS Board President Lesie Fillnow, with husband Bob, and guest cook David Robichaud.

Funds raised will support educational programming for foreign language students and New Mainers.Dinner guests must register online at www.penobscot.us/events/category/cultural-events/. The $40 admission fee includes an authentic four course meal, wine/beer or nonalcoholic beverages. A discussion of Italian history, heritage, stereotypes, in the Americas and the “Old Country.”

Cultural Dinner event

A Cultural Dinner event called “A Deep Dive into African Influences in American Culture: A History of Denial and Theft” takes place Tuesday, July 19, from 5:30-8 p.m. The cost is $45. 

We will be exploring inequity and cultural appropriation in the Black experience in America. Guests must register online at www.penobscot.us/events/category/cultural-events/.

The $45 admission fee includes a tasting sample of numerous dishes associated with American cooking that are in fact direct descendants of African cuisine. Proceeds support our free ESL of New Mainers program, which offers English language classes and support to all new Mainers.

Registered guests will enjoy numerous samples of African influenced dishes, wine or beer, and a presentation by chef and world renowned African music educator and performer, Mr. Jordan Bennisan of Me Lon Togo Restaurant (Rockland). A special guest performer will also be participating in the event. Dinner will be served on the back patio and gardens of Penobscot Bay Language School.
