ST. GEORGE — A Washington, D.C. woman died Tuesday night June 21 from injuries she suffered earlier in the day when her car went off the road and struck multiple trees.

According to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, Elizabeth Houten, 77, of Washington D.C., was traveling south on River Road at 8:45 a.m. June 21. Houten failed to negotiate a left hand corner, drove off the right side of the road and her car struck multiple trees. Police said fatigue is considered a contributing factor.

Houten had to be extricated from the vehicle and was taken to a local hospital for injuries. The Sheriff’s Office reported that Houten died that evening from her injuries.

The vehicle was towed due to disabling damage. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by St. George Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services, and the South Thomaston Fire Department and Automaster.
