Allison McKellar’s most recent article about the Montgomery Dam brings up a most interesting question. Is Allison now the official spokesperson for the Select Board including announcing future decisions that haven’t been publicly discussed? I am referring to her statement “the next big decisions we make about the dam will be the result of robust community discussion and a vote by a lot more people than just those who can show up for an in-person town meeting.” Is Allison telling us that she and the board are cancelling our great tradition of Town Meeting? Of course, it’s naive to suggest that only a few people would show up to a Town Meeting that involved a question about the dam. About a thousand people signed petitions concerning the dam. The opera house would be overloaded if a dam question was on the warrant. Covid may have been a recent excuse but absent a pandemic Town Meeting is our traditional way of doing business.
