THOMASTON — After several recent requests for flowers from our residents at the shelter, I knew something was up. I decided to check in with Freya. She always has her ear to the ground when it comes to the goings on at Pope Memorial Humane Society and will tell all in exchange for a special treat and some extra hugs.

Sure enough, she had the reason for the sudden interest in Flora amongst her pals. Legend has it, if you place seven flowers under your pillow at the time of the Summer Solstice your true love will appear. It seems our potential adoptees are hoping it will also bring in their new, loving families. As you can see, these displaced pets are longing for their happily ever after homes. Celebrate the coming solstice by being the light in one of these deserving lives. They will be waiting for you, flowers, and all.

Freya is hoping pink petunias do the trick. One meeting with her and you will realize this two-year-old is something special. Freya loves giving hugs, being chased, and doing “zoomies” in the yard. She enjoys playing with her dog buddies and wouldn’t mind a brother or sister.

Golden Snitch is banking on Marigolds. You see, they match his beautiful coat, and Snitch is nothing if not a dapper cat. This handsome young lad came to us as part of a colony in Rockland. Over the winter, we watched his personality blossom as he learns to enjoy our company. A home willing to give him that little bit of extra time and patience will be rewarded with his affection. His only request is you have another cat or two for him to chum around with.

If you would like more information about Freya or Golden Snitch, contact Pope Memorial Humane Society at 207-594-2200. You will find applications at our website at

Stop by and visit us at the Rockland Summer Solstice Party June 18 from 4-7 p.m. We will have a great selection of baked goods for sale to benefit the shelter.

Our wish list includes kitten chow, canned cat food, paper towels and bleach.
