ST. GEORGE — On Friday, June 17, a show of hooked rugs and paintings by Anne Cox, entitled “Nesting,” opens at Hedgerow Gallery, 8 Ridge Road.

The inspiration for the six hooked rugs in the show was a nest made by a pair of Cedar Waxwings outside a second-floor window at Cox’s home last summer. “I found the nest-building activity of those birds intriguing and it set me to thinking about the different textures and patterns in nests made by different birds, and how I could work that into a hooked piece,” she said. Cox also worked the distinctive markings of each bird — Osprey, Pileated Woodpecker, Goldfinch, Red-wing Blackbird and American Robin, in addition to the Cedar Waxwing — into her designs.

The paintings in Cox’s show are, by contrast, glimpses of Cox’s own “nest,” vignettes of pleasing patterns and textures.

Cox’s show runs through July 10.

Hedgerow Gallery is open Wednesdays through Sundays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, visit hedgerowdesign.com.
