THOMASTON — Did you know Pope sponsors a Volunteer Orientation once a month? The next one is scheduled for Saturday, June 11, at 11 a.m. here at the shelter. It lasts about an hour, and you will learn about the history of the shelter and the various programs we have to place animals in loving homes.

We will review the volunteer opportunities available to determine what would be the best fit for you. Sign-up to be a volunteer and you can help us fulfill our mission “to ensure the compassionate care, treatment and placement of companion animals in transition and enrich the lives of pets and people in our community.” And, finally, you get a personal tour of our shelter.

Go to our website — — and complete the volunteer application and mark your calendar for June 11.

Our pet picks this week are Pineapple and Sparky. Pineapple is a big, strong, handsome boy, who is 9.5 years old. This lovable boy is on a special diet and regular medication to help keep his bladder issues in check. Don’t let that deter you from coming in to meet him. He’s a very special kitty, and a favorite of our cat condo teams.

Sparky, a black DSH male, at 3.5 years old, is looking for a home of his own too. He can be very affectionate, but also very feisty at times. He used to live in my office, but would ambush any dogs that came in his vicinity — such courage. He also acted as my clerical assistant by entering rows of identical letters on my word document when he sat on my keyboard. He can be an indoor/outdoor cat, but would need to be the only pet. If you like black panthers, Sparky would make a good substitute.

Stop by the shelter and meet Pineapple and Sparky or any of the other wonderful animals up for adoption. We’re open Monday through Saturday, 11 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Wish list: String cheese, paper towels, bleach, laundry detergent, pate style poultry flavored canned cat food, and gift certificates to grocery stores — Walmart, Staples and other local businesses.
