CUSHING — A 50-year-old Cushing man remains behind bars on a charge he repeatedly punched a woman over the weekend.

Martin J. Link was arrested Sunday night, May 29, and charged with Class D domestic violence assault. According to the affidavit filed in court by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, the victim told police Link punched her in the head and repeatedly in the ribs such that she was having difficulty breathing.

She was taken to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport. An earring she was wearing had been pulled out, tearing the ear lobe, according to the affidavit.

A couple who were staying in a camper outside the residence, said they heard the woman calling out for help. The man said he was scared so he hid at the far end of the camper.

Link was taken to the Knox County Jail in Rockland. He made his initial appearance Tuesday, May 31, in the Knox County court where Judge John Martin set bail at $2,500 cash, the amount sought by the district attorney’s office.

Assistant District Attorney Kathryn King pointed out to Judge John Martin that Link has a 2011 conviction for domestic violence assault, and assault.

The victim also told Knox County officers Link assaulted her many times but never to this extent, according to the police affidavit.

Link’s next court appearance is scheduled for July 28.

The police affidavit noted the victim told an officer, on the day following the alleged assault, she would not cooperate in the investigation. She said she and Link had been under a lot of stress and he reached the breaking point. The woman acknowledged police took the correct action in arresting Link, according to the affidavit.
