The high school tennis seasons began on Midcoast courts for Medomak Valley and Oceanside on Thursday, April 21, as the neighboring athletic rivals played one another as the Panthers emerged with victories.
In the boys match at Waldoboro, the Panthers prowled to a 5-0 win, while in the girls match at Rockland, the Panthers edged the Mariners 3-2.
The following is a recap of the matches:
Boys
Medomak Valley 5, Oceanside 0
At Waldoboro April 21, the talented Panthers held court against the Mariners — the latter of whom were missing players due to a school-sponsored trip to France — and netted the shutout.
The individual results, with Medomak Valley players listed first, were: In singles, Noah Ludwig beat Michael Frost, 6-1, 6-0; Adi Mellor beat Donovan Sidelinger, 6-0, 6-1; and Grant Wilson beat Jacob Lai, 6-0, 6-0.
At first doubles, Kory Donlin and Vishal Mellor beat Tim Watts and Connor Macy, 6-0, 6-0. Oceanside forfeited second doubles.
“I’m very proud of how all of the Oceanside players played today,”said first-year Mariner coach Kate Marchessault. “Every one of them played up in position on the ladder. They all came out of their matches realizing positive aspects of their game and identifying places to focus working on. Overall we had a successful match in growth and positive attitude as well as good sportsmanship all-around.”
