WALDOBORO — The Medomak Valley boys tennis team hopes to equal — or  improve — on last year’s strong campaign and began that process with a preparation match at Class B South rival Freeport on Tuesday, April 12.

In the preseason event, the Panthers prevailed 4-1, as the visitors swept singles.

The individual results, with Panthers listed first, were: In singles, Isaac Swain beat Teo Horne, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6); Noah Ludwig beat Everett Sawyer, 6-4, 6-3; and Zan Nguygen beat Alek Girein, 7-5, 6-2.

In doubles, Addison Mellor and Kylar Potter lost to Ian Grimm and Brian Brogan, 4-6, 1-6; and Kory Donlin and Vishal Mellor beat Ian Smith and Will Dunham, 8-5.

In 2021, the Panthers experienced their finest season in history. The squad finished 11-4 and lost in the semifinals of the Class B North tournament.

Veteran MVHS coach William Hinkley said the 2022 team is led by six returning players. Swain, Nyugen and Ludwig expect to hold down the singles spots, the coach said. “Isaac had an excellent freshman year at second singles and should be a very strong first singles for the team this year and into the future,” Hinkley said.

At doubles, Addison Mellor and Potter will compete with Donlin for first and second doubles spots. The last spot for the top seven varsity roster will see competition from a bevy of promising newcomers.

Gavin White, Sully Bartlett and Vishal Mellor have tennis experience and quickly are learning the game, the coach said. Connor Benner, Thomas Bagley, John Brann, Grant Wilson and Henry Gamage have improved and will gain experience in exhibition and junior varsity matches this season, Hinkley said.

“We are anticipating an excellent season,” Hinkley said. “During the regular season we play local rival Camden Hills [of Rockport] twice. This gives us an opportunity to play against one of the top Class A programs in the state and see the level we’ll need to compete at if we hope to make another deep playoff run.”
