BATH — Four Midcoast high school wrestling teams saw a handful of students qualify for the state Class B championships on Saturday, Feb. 19, but when the matches were finished from the daylong event one area mat athlete returned home as a champion — namely, Oceanside’s Gavin Ripley at 126 pounds.

Oceanside of Rockland, Medomak Valley of Waldoboro, Belfast and Mount View of Thorndike were among the schools who had competitors in the tournament at Morse High School.

Area squads saw their athletes perform well, including those who finished among the top four:

Oceanside — Gavin Ripley (1st at 126) and Maddie Ripley (2nd at 113). The Ripleys are twin siblings.

Belfast — Kaden Bonin (2nd at 132), Connor Fournier (3rd at 120), Gabe Kelley (3rd at 160), Ryker Evans (4th at 113) and Francesco Martin (4th at 152).

Gavin Ripley said it “feels amazing” to win the state title, especially after a slow start to season after a football injury caused him to miss the first couple weeks of matches. He said he had a quick return and had tough matches to quickly get him into wrestling shape. He said he hopes to realize success at the New England qualifier.

The team scores were: Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln 149, Wells 93, York 88, Mountain Valley of Rumford 75, Morse of Bath 74.5, Belfast 69, Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield 50.5, Lincoln Academy of Newcastle 49, Oceanside 44, Bucksport 42, Dexter 40, Erskine Academy of South China 39, Winslow 30.5, Piscataquis of Guilford 23, Fryeburg Academy 21, Fort Kent 19, Foxcroft Academy of Dover-Foxcroft 18, Old Town 13, Dirigo of Dixfield/Spruce Mountain of Jay 10, Medomak Valley 3, Mount View 3 and Caribou, Ellsworth, Monmouth Academy/Richmond and Woodland no score.
