Mariners anchor perfect regular season, improve win streak to 29 games

ROCKLAND — For the second straight year, the Oceanside girls basketball team finished unbeaten, this time with another convincing victory in its regular-season high school court finale on Thursday night, Feb. 10.

Now, the Mariners, undefeated (13-0) Knox-Lincoln-Waldo county champions last year and 16-0 this season, set their sights on regional and state Class B titles.

Oceanside, 29-0 the past two winters, ended the 2021-22 regular season with an 81-40 home victory over Mount View of Thorndike on Thursday.

In 16 games, the dominant, multi-talented Mariners outscored opponents 1,060-522 (66.3-32.6 average).

Oceanside probably will finish second to once-beaten Wells for the Class B South tournament. Mount View, which plays in Class B North, finished 7-11.

On Thursday, the Mariners led 16-6, 44-18 and 64-31 at the quarter breaks.

Audrey Mackie, who is closing in on 900 points for her career, tossed in 30 points, which included eight three-pointers. Bailey Breen added 23 points; Anna Kingsbury, 10; Caitlyn Lamb, five; Emily Sykes, Sophia Daggett and Ahlivia Morris, three; and Aubri Hoose and Abby Waterman, two.

The Mariners iced 6-of-12 free throws (50 percent) and a whopping 14 triples, including two from Kingsbury and Breen and one from Morris and Sykes.

Waterman (7 rebounds, 2 steals), Breen (7 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals), Mackie (6 rebounds), Kingsbury (6 rebounds, 2 assists), Sykes (2 rebounds), Morris (3 rebounds, 3 steals), Daggett (6 rebounds) and Lamb (2 rebounds) keyed the hosts statistically.

For the Mustangs of Thorndike, who had only seven players available, Kricket Thompson tallied 13 points; Hannah Coolen, 10; Kayleigh Dunton, eight; Ari Bradeen, six; and Syd Vogel, three. Mount View netted 9-of-17 foul shots (53 percent) and got treys from Coolen, Vogel and Dunton.

The contest also pitted two of the taller female basketball players in the Midcoast — in 6-foot 3-inch Thompson and 6-2 1/2 Breen — against one another.

Additionally, before the game, Oceanside coach Matt Breen was presented a plaque for reaching 200 wins for his career, in December, during his time guiding the varsity boys hoop programs at Rockland District High School and Oceanside High School, along with the Mariner girls in recent years. Breen returned to coaching this season after being sidelined in 2020-21 due to health issues.
