UNION — Elvira Anne Burgess Hayes, 90, passed away peacefully on Feb. 2, 2022, at the Sussman House, after a brief illness.

Anne was born in Rockland, Maine, on March 24, 1931, to Ida Perry and Eric Johnson. As a girl, she and her sister, Nina, spent many summers together with family on Eagle Island, North Haven, and Owls Head. She graduated from Rockland High School in 1949. While working at her stepfather’s business, Clark’s Flower Shop, Anne met and married Frank Burgess. They built several homes and raised five sons in Union.

Anne was known for being an exceptional seamstress. She would purchase material at “Susabel’s on the Common” for a dress. The same evening, she’d be wearing it. Anne was also known for being a wonderful cook. She and Frank were members of the People’s United Methodist Church where she played the organ. She was a self-taught organist who played strictly from ear. Anne and Frank were married for 29 years, until his death in 1978. She reconnected with her high school classmate Wesley Hayes, who she married in 1981. Anne and Wes made their home in the south before returning to Maine in 2009. They were married for 30 years, until his death in 2011.

Anne is predeceased by her parents; her sister, Nina; and brother-in-law, Al Bradford; her sister-in-law, Eva; and her husband, Henry Newell; brother-in-law, James Laidlaw; and former daughter-in-law, Peggy Hooper Burgess.

Anne is survived and will be greatly missed by her very dear friend, John Talbot; her sister, Judy Laidlaw; her sons: Marc, and wife, Debbie, Charles, and friend, Ramona, Fred, and wife, Irene, Richard, and wife, Faith, and Tom, and wife, Pam; her step-daughters: Christine Chrzanowski, and husband, Ron, Alison Siller, and husband, Peter, and Kimberly Cass, and husband, Chester. She also leaves behind many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

A celebration of Anne’s life will be held at a later date to be announced. She will be laid to rest at Lake View Cemetery in Union. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to People’s United Methodist Church, PO Box 105, Union, ME 04862.
