WALDOBORO — After a one-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the fourth “Paws for the Cause” basketball games at Medomak Valley High School return to raise money for breast cancer foundations.

The events will be on Tuesday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. (Camden Hills of Rockport at Medomak Valley boys) and Tuesday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. (Lincoln Academy of Newcastle at Medomak Valley girls) at the school.

The events are hosted and sponsored by the MVHS athletic department, in conjunction with the Medomak Valley All Sports Boosters.

For the special games, expected to attract strong spectator support thanks to the longstanding athletic rivalries between the participating schools, Medomak Valley players will wear unique, pink uniforms.

Fundraising will take place prior to, and during, the game with an opportunity to add one’s personalized “pink paw” to the wall for a $1 donation.

Proceeds from the two nights will go to area breast cancer foundations which are dedicated to making a difference in Maine people through advocacy, education and financial support, said John Murphy, who, with his wife, Gayle, a breast cancer survivor, came up with the idea of the fundraising games and have played a pivotal developmental and financial role in the events.

“We’re excited to build upon the overwhelming success of our three previous events,” said Bonnie Moody, boosters president. “We’ve raised $22.000 for Maine Breast Cancer coalition in front of near sellout crowds over the previous three years and hope to continue to build upon that total this year.”
