APPLETON — The Internal Revenue Service has placed a lien on the Appleton School Department.
The federal agency approved the lien on Jan. 7 and filed the lien in the Knox County Registry of Deeds on Jan. 18.
The lien is for $11,814, and covers unpaid withholding taxes by the school department for tax year 2020.
School Union 69 Superintendent Kathryn Clark said Wednesday, Jan. 19 the lien is the result of a bookkeeping error from early 2020. She said the school district has been working with the IRS to resolve the matter during the past several months.
“We’re having a back and forth with them,” she said.
She said the error was just a mistake. She said when payment is made it will need to be approved by the school board.
Clark was hired as superintendent in mid-2020.
