ROCKLAND — Rockland police were called to a littering incident at City Hall Wednesday, Jan. 12 that appears related to opposition to mask requirements.
Twenty-five face masks were dumped around the parking lot of City Hall sometime Tuesday night, Jan. 11. The masks were found when employees came to work Wednesday.
The masks were each scrawled with messages such as “Fauci is a fraud,” and “Fire Luttrell.”
Dr. Anthony Fauci is the chief medical adviser to President Joe Biden, and has urged people to wear face masks as a way to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Fauci has been a lightning rod for people who oppose both mask mandates, vaccination mandates, and people who downplay the pandemic that has resulted in the deaths of more than 800,000 people in the United Stated during the past two years.
Rockland City Manager Tom Luttrell imposed a requirement that people who come into City Hall must wear a face mask. That requirement became effective Jan. 3. The requirement came as the number of cases spike in the region.
City staff cleaned up the litter.
