WARREN — For those who look to shed a few precious holiday pounds — and honor a former Medomak Valley High School student-athlete — the PITCH has the remedy on Wednesday, Dec. 29.

The inaugural Zak Winpenny 5-versus-5 soccer tournament will be 4 to 7 p.m. at the PITCH, with the entry donation suggested to be $60 per team (or $12 per player). Proceeds from the event will go to the Zachary Michael Winpenny Scholarship, which provides college monetary assistance to area high school graduates.

Those of all ages and experience may participate. Players can sign-up with a team or individuals will be assigned a squad.

Winpenny, a multiple-sport athlete at MVHS who passed away in an automobile accident on Dec. 16, 2020 in Warren.

“This is a time to remember Zak in a fun way by gathering and enjoying his favorite sport, sharing stories and memories and raising funds for a great cause in his name,” said Emily Cheesman, one of the event organizers.

Donations of cash, refreshments and prizes are welcome and spectators may attend. There also will be t-shirts for sale, prizes and a 50/50 raffle.

To sign-up for the event, donate or pre-purchase a t-shirt (suggested donation is $12 per shirt), call Cheesman at 542-9351 or email her at eecheesman@gmail.com. To sign-up online, click here.
