ROCKPORT — Rockport police said Thursday, Dec. 16 the investigation of an Oct. 16 car crash that claimed the lives of two people did not determine why one of the drivers veered into the oncoming lane.
Rockport Police Sgt. James Moore said alcohol and speed were not factors in the crash.
According to Rockport Police, the head-on collision occurred near the intersection of Commercial and Pleasant streets at 1:27 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16. A Volkswagen being driven north on Route 1 by Calvin Elwell, 35, of Rockland, veered into the oncoming lane. His vehicle struck a southbound 2019 Subaru driven by Karen Kohlhepp, 59, of Belfast.
Elwell died, as did Janet Vera, 58, of Northport, who was the rear passenger in the vehicle driven by Kohlhepp. Kohlhepp, and another one of her passengers, Judy Johnson, 82, of Northport, were seriously injured, according to police.
Rockport Police were assisted at the scene by Camden Police, Rockport Fire, Northeast Mobile Health, and Rockland Fire & EMS.
