ROCKPORT — Jan Abendroth is retiring at the end of the year after having owned and operated Rockport Automotive on Commercial Street since 2013.

In that time, she has earned a reputation in the community for giving back. Since 2013, the business has donated $54,000 to local organizations by taking $5 from each oil change for the cause. Those agencies include PAWS, New Hope Midcoast, CMCA, United Midcoast Charities, AIO Food Pantry, Honor Flights, LifeFlight and many more.

Jan bought the business from Steve Dixson in 2013. She is a Rockport native as well as a current resident. She notes that her parents once owned Seven Mountains Motel, now known as the Starlight Lodge.

Andrew Lappin, the current shop manager, and his wife, Kristin Lappin, the office manager and bookkeeper, will take over the business for Jan when she leaves. She said she is happy to be passing the torch on to the next generation.

“I am so proud of Andrew and Kristin,” she said.

She said her favorite part of running the business has been customer service and the relationships she has been able to create in the community.

“Everyone has a car and it is a lot of responsibility to take care of that vehicle you use to take your kids to basketball practice or to swim meets,” she said. “We take that very seriously.” She said her goal is to keep families safe on the roads.

Her dedication has been recognized. In 2017, the business received the Governor’s Award for Business Excellence and in 2013 it received an award from the State for Excellence in Commerce. It has been honored with awards in the Best of the Best in 2014, 2016, 2018, 2020 and 2021. (She said if you go to David Herrick’s shop, you will see the odd years on his wall).

She said she is not sure what she will do with her time in retirement. She hopes to volunteer some of her time. Her husband, George Abendroth, is already retired and looking forward to her joining him. The two have four grown children and two grandchildren.
