ROCKLAND — A commercial fishing boat was heavily damaged Tuesday night, Nov. 3o when a fire roared through the vessel while parked at a boatyard.

The Dark Star was ablaze when the first crews arrived shortly before 9:30 p.m. in a parking lot of Journey’s End Marina on Tillson Avenue. Flames shot high in the sky, and thick smoke poured from the vessel.

Rockland Fire Chief Chris Whytock said the scallop boat is owned by Erik Waterman.

“There was a person doing work for the owner on the boat,” Whytock said. “The resin he was mixing to complete the work on the deck became too hot and started on fire. It spread quickly to the back side of the wheel house, and was unable to be extinguished.”

The department’s ladder truck was sent to the scene to help put out the blaze.

The boat was located within a few feet from one of the marina buildings.

Rockland police also responded to the blaze and blocked off Tillson Avenue west of the fire.

Crews were able to return to the station around 11 p.m.
