VERSHIRE, V.T. — Ethel Louise Pike, of Vershire, Vt., passed away peacefully on Oct. 28, 2021, at the age of 77.

Ethel was born on July 31, 1944, in Presque Isle. Her family moved around a bit throughout Maine, Massachusetts and New York. Ethel graduated from Peabody High School in 1962 of Peabody, Mass. Ethel was in the United States Air Force Reserves and was honorably discharged in 1971. Ethel graduated from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst nursing program, and worked for a dozen of years in Hartford, Conn., San Francisco, Calif., and Hanover and Lebanon, N.H., primarily as a critical care nurse. Ethel continued her love of learning with a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies, concentration in Women’s Studies from Dartmouth College in 1986.

Ethel moved from Boston to Vermont in 1977, and finally to Vershire in 1983. Ethel helped develop the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical center (DHMC), and, subsequently, became the Nurse Manager of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. until she retired in 2005. Ethel also participated in DHMC’s exchange with hospitals in Zagreb, Croatia, and consulted around the country on new PICU development. After retirement, she worked as a Veterinary Technician for Chelsea Animal Hospital in Chelsea, Vt. Most recently Ethel became a Lister for Vershire, and the volunteer manager of the Snowshoe-a-Thon fundraiser for the Children’s Activity Fund and summer camp. Ethel enjoyed many summers in South Hope, Maine at their family cottage, kayaking, boating, and swimming in Lermond Pond.

Ethel was an active supporter of the Doberman Rescue Unlimited Inc., Dartmouth Women’s Basketball and the VerShare Program — a program that develops the community and provides benefits to the residents of Vershire, Vt. Ethel had many hobbies, some included, watching the Red Sox, kayaking, gardening, playing Stratomatic, studying French, raising cats and training her many Dobermans over the years.

She was predeceased by her mother, Muriel Jean Folkins Pike; father, Harvard L. Pike, Sr.; brother, Jonathan Robert Pike; and uncle, Sherman Pike, Sr. She is survived by her brother, Harvard “Rusty” Pike, Jr. and wife, Mary Anne Pike; nieces, Kelly Marie Bayer and Erin Stacy Pike-Olson; cousins Joanne Folkins, Sherman Pike and Kim Thompson; and many friends.

A Celebration of Life Ceremony will take place on May 14th, 2021, at 2 p.m. at the Vershire Town Center, 27 Vershire Center Rd, Vershire, VT 05079.
