WALDOBORO — The youthful Medomak Valley High School girls junior varsity soccer team, despite a lower than hoped win total, grew by leaps and bounds through its 10-game campaign in 2021.

Led by coach Steph Williams, the Panthers netted a 2-5-3 record and gained valuable experience during the season.

Team members included Rachel Readinger, Acadia Dinsmore, Eliza Luce, Marissa O’Jala, Jordan Doughty, Kierra Spradlin, Devan Rainey, Ryleigh Rainey, Audrey Jackson, Lily Christ, Haley Blake, Aubrianna Adkins-Carter, Sadie Knight, Dakotah Bracket, Erica Waite, Mandi Karl, Skylah Ward and Cindy Shelmerdine.

Williams said her team “certainly improved throughout the season” and “that’s all I could ask of these lovely young ladies.”

“Although it was a building year for our very young team, I believe that they all walked away better players,” she said. “We spent time working on the basics this year and improved on our footwork, fundamentals, technique and broke down positions. We did one-touch, two-touch [and] give-and-go drills. We worked on locking our ankles, ball-striking, how to defend, how to possess and how to work as a team together.”

Williams said Waite “was aggressive in the goal” and “our defense gained a lot of knowledge this season and really tightened up and worked as a unit as the season progressed.”

“Mandi Karl was our standout defenseman and we were grateful to have her leading the pack in the back,” she said. “As well as Cindy Shelmerdine, Haley Blake, Lilliana Christ, Devan Rainey, Audri Adkins and Dakotah Brackett.

She added “Skylah Ward, Ryleigh Rainey, Jordan Doughty, Marissa O’Jala, Acadia Dinsmore, Audrey Jackson and Eliza Luce all did a tremendous job in the midfield,” while Jackson, Knight, Readinger and Spradlin were “very eager and aggressive to put pressure on the opposing defense” from the forward position.

“We will need to continue putting in the work, especially on our first touch and possession, but, overall, I was impressed with their determination and hustle,” she said. “I am looking forward to next year.”
