BELFAST — Bidding is open in Belfast Curling Club’s first online auction, running through Nov. 20, to raise funds to help repair substantial 2020 water damage and facilitate its return to league play, upcoming bonspiels (tournaments) and international events in 2022.

Since 1959, Belfast Curling Club, the only dedicated curling facility in Maine, has been part of the social fabric of Belfast and beyond, providing its 160 members from over 80 Maine towns and cities the opportunity to enjoy the physical and mental benefits gained through participating in this highly social sport, and furthering a sense of community.

The year 2020 brought the club news that it was selected as one of only 16 clubs in the U.S. to host the prestigious USWCA Women’s Incoming Scot Tour in November 2022. But after the pandemic caused the club to shut down prematurely last year, a hot water pipe burst and went undiscovered for several days, resulting in catastrophic damage. The upcoming online auction will help raise funds toward an estimated $300,000 in repairs.

The “Curling Rocks” auction features over 90 items from supporting community members and businesses.  There is something for everyone, ranging from a Scribner first-edition hardback copy of “Revival” signed by Stephen King, a schooner cruise for 12, a three-hour tour aboard a lobster boat, a one-hour flight in a Cessna, camps and vacation getaways, a curling clinic, gift certificates, artwork, woodwork, pottery, yarn, quilts, golf, legal services, custom teeth whitening and more.   The auction concludes at midnight Saturday, Nov. 20. Log in, register, and bid at https://fundraiser.support/BelfastCurlingClub.

Monetary donations are also welcomed by Belfast Curling Club, which is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation.

Meanwhile, the club is active again with Learn to Curl classes and Skills Clinics. Contact Steve McLaughlin to register and get information on what to bring to class: call 685-9540 or email mclaughlin.steve.a@roadrunner.com. Also coming up Dec. 2-5 is the club’s first-ever Belfast Open Doubles bonspiel.
