Rockland and Owls Head are expected to soon fill vacancies on the regional school board.

Two people have expressed interest in the vacancy for the single seat Owls Head gets on the Regional School Unit 13 Board. The Owls Head Select Board is scheduled to appoint a replacement for the seat being vacated by Susan Allen Thomas at its Monday afternoon, Nov. 15 meeting. The term runs through the annual town meeting in 2022.

Owls Head Select Board Chair Gordon Page said Nancy Jeffers and Maria Devery expressed interest in filling the vacancy. Page said he would recommend the Select Board make a motion to appoint Jeffers.

Jeffers served six years on the RSU 13 Board representing Rockland, being elected in 2012 and 2015. She was vice chair of the board in 2018. Jeffers also represented Rockland on RSU 13’s predecessor School Administrative District 5, dating back to 2006. She and her husband have since moved to Owls Head.

Devery has attended school board and Select Board meetings this year. She has claimed masks and vaccinations are not necessary and present a greater risk than the COVID-19 virus. She also claimed at a May 17 Owls Head meeting, without offering evidence, the school district was teaching students if they are white they are automatically racists.

In Rockland, Jason White has expressed interest in filling a three-year vacancy to represent Rockland on the school board. On election day, Nov. 2, Kelli McCannell was elected to a three-year seat, but there were two vacancies created when Tom Peaco and Doug Curtis Jr. decided not to seek re-election.

White is with Maine Health Behavioral Organization.

The mayor will nominate a candidate to fill the vacancy. A vote on the appointment could be done in December.

Appointments by municipal board run until the next general election in Rockland and the next annual town meeting in Owls Head.

Four new members have already joined the 10-member RSU 13 Board this year — McCannell, Brad Choyt of South Thomaston, David Martz of Rockland, and Quixada Moore-Vissing of Thomaston.
