VINALHAVEN — A 35-year-old Vinalhaven man was arrested, accused of assaulting a woman and trying to strangle her.

Austin C. Podziewski was arrested in connection to the Monday, Nov. 1 incident and charged with Class B aggravated assault, Class C aggravated after habitual offender revocation, and criminal operating under the influence.

The criminal complaint in the Knox County court lists his address as a camper on Vinalhaven.

According to an affidavit filed in court by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, officers were called to a home on Vinalhaven where a woman said Podziewski had put his hands around her neck and was trying to choke her. She said he failed to stop when she pleaded for her life and didn’t stop when her dog attacked him. The woman said he only stopped when her two young children were screaming and crying. He also threw the woman on the floor, according to the police report.

The deputy noticed marks on her neck.

Podziewski was found that night, and said he did not remember putting his hands around her neck, saying he sometimes blacks out. He was taken to a hospital and then transferred to different one. The Sheriff’s Office obtained the arrest warrant from the court for when the suspect was released from the hospital.

He was officially arrested on Monday afternoon, Nov. 8.

Podziewski made his initial court appearance Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 10. Judge John Martin set bail at $5,000 cash.
