ROCKLAND — A season of ups and downs and fits and starts for the Oceanside football team has concluded thanks to an unrelenting virus.

Oceanside athletic director Troy Smith and veteran coach Wes Drinkwater confirmed the Mariners will not, as scheduled, host Hermon in a Class C North quarterfinal high school playoff game due to a positive COVID-19 case and close contacts left the Mariners with only 14 players.

The game was to be played on Friday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. at Wasgatt Field.

The Mariners will forfeit the game to the Hawks. Thus, Oceanside’s season has concluded.

No. 4 Oceanside and No. 5 Hermon were 2-3 during the regular season.

The Mariners had several games canceled this fall due to COVID-19 protocols.

The Mariners and Hawks did not play one another in the regular season.
