BELFAST — More than 80 participants turned out for the Ryan King Memorial 5-kilometer cross-country and 5K Croc races on Saturday, Oct. 9 at Troy Howard Middle School.

The event was held in honor of Ryan King of Stockton Springs, a longtime runner, and former cross-country coach for Maine Maritime Academy of Castine before his passing during the summer 2021.

Unlike other cross-country races, the 3.1-mile event boasted options for trail runners.

The first race was a classic trail run. Known to many as the “Festival of Champions” course, THMS also is the home course of MMA, and one of King’s favorites.

The second race followed the same course route, but runners wore Crocs, or off-brand Croc-like shoes, to run. Directors said King claimed to hold the fastest 5K time run in Croc shoes in several of Maine’s counties.

Money raised from the event will be donated to the Appalachian Trail Fund as King had spent much of his time maintaining a section of the trail, and had been section hiking it before his death.

In the cross-country race, Ponce Saltzsiak was the first finisher, and first male, to cross the course in 17:06.

Kristine Guaraldo was the first female finisher, as she placed 21st overall in 23:02.

In the Croc race, Luke Thombs was the first male finisher, and first overall in 19:22.

Guaraldo also participated in the Croc race, and again was the first female finisher, as she was sixth overall at 23:36.
