BELFAST — The Ryan King Memorial 5-kilomer cross-country and 5K Croc races will be on Saturday, Oct. 9 at Troy Howard Middle School.

The event is in honor of Ryan King of Stockton Springs, a longtime runner, and former cross-country coach for Maine Maritime Academy of Castine before his passing during the summer 2021.

Unlike other cross-country races, the 3.1-mile event boasts options for trail runners.

The first race is a classic trail run. Known to many as the “Festival of Champions” course, THMS also is the home course of MMA, and one of King’s favorites. The trail run starts at 10:30 a.m.

The second race follows the same course, but runners will don Crocs, or off-brand Croc-like shoes, to run. Directors said King claimed to hold the fastest 5K time run in Croc shoes in several of Maine’s counties.

The Croc run begins at 11:45 a.m.

Runners can partake in one, or both races.

The registration fee for a single race is $25. To run both, the cost is $35.

Race directors said they understand there may be those who are not comfortable running in-person, and some may not be able to make it to Belfast, thus, the option to participate virtually is available.

After race expenses, money from the event will be donated to the Appalachian Trail Fund as King had spent much of his time maintaining a section of the trail, and had been section hiking it before his death.
