The Maine Reapportionment Commission released Sept. 21 the proposed new Maine House legislative district boundaries and the plan means changes in most of the local seats.

The proposal was a joint plan submitted by both Democrats and Republicans. A public hearing on all the Reapportionment Commission proposals will be held Sept. 23. A reapportionment plan needs to be approved by two-thirds of the Legislature, or the issue goes to the Maine Supreme Judicial Court.

The following are the proposed new districts in the Midcoast.

State Representative District 15: In Knox County are the municipalities of Isle au Haut and Vinalhaven. In Hancock County are the municipalities of Brooklin, Deer Isle, Frenchboro, Southwest Harbor, Stonington, Swans Island and Tremont.

State Representative District 44: In Knox County are the municipalities of Hope, Union and Warren.

State Representative District 45: In Knox County are the municipalities of Friendship and Washington; and
In Lincoln County are the municipalities of Bremen, Louds Island and Waldoboro.

Proposed state Senate district maps were released Sept. 21. There are few changes.

The proposed new state Senate district will depend on whether the Democratic or Republican proposal is adopted.

The Democratic proposal is for the seat to remain nearly the same, consisting of all of Knox County except the town of Washington and Isle au Haut. Isle au Haut would be moved to a Senate District largely consisting of Hancock County towns. The Republican proposal would consist of all of Knox County except Vinalhaven and North Haven and Isle au Haut.

The three islands would shift to a district that consists of mainly Hancock County towns and the Knox County town of Washington would move from its current mainly Lincoln County district to the Knox County district.

Reapportionment occurs every 10 years after the U.S. Census is released. The goal is to have districts as close to the same population as possible.
