CAMDEN — The seventh Ragged Mountain Scuttle obstacle course race took off — and over — Ragged Mountain on Sunday morning, Sept. 19 at the Camden Snow Bowl.

The 3.2-mile scuttle race course on the Kuller Trail allowed runners and walkers to enjoy the rugged terrain and beautiful view at the top, while they tackle 20-plus obstacles.

The course offered a variety of natural and man-made obstacles on a trail with plenty of elevation. The majority of the event was on an intermediate level trail. However, the trail had steep pitches and climbed 500 feet.

Proceeds from the event supported the Snow Bowl’s fourth-grade Learn to Ski Program and One Community Many Voices, a Rockland-based charity. OCMV, a 501c(3), provides proactive solutions to prevent a temporary barrier turning into a financial, self-confidence, or well-being crisis when no other resources are available. In return, recipients pay it forward through self-selected volunteerism.

After being put on pause in 2020 due to the pandemic, the event found its footing in 2021, to make a return. However, challenges still presented hurdles for organizers, volunteers, and participants.

Audrey Lovering of OCMV said it was the first time in the seven years of the event rain impacted the trails and obstacles for the course.

Heavy rain the night before the event soaked portions of the trails, and obstacles, which added additional challenges for race participants in the form of mud, and slippery trail sections, as well as slick obstacles.

The “hot stepper” obstacles proved the toughest for competitors to defeat with its steep angles being damp from the rain.

“This event is made possible because of the generosity of sponsors, and 120 volunteers collectively donating 1,300 hours of their time to make this event happen,” Lovering said before the event.

Volunteers assemble the obstacles, and also help at the start and finish lines, as well as throughout the course. With the Midcoast still impacted by COVID-19, in the days leading up to the race, the event found itself short nearly 20 volunteers.

However, the event still proved a success with 180 people, of all ages, ready to tackle the course and obstacles. Two hardy souls toughed the course twice consecutively, completing 6.4 miles.
