THOMASTON — Fitness enthusiasts in Midcoast Maine have a new way to scratch that itch.

RisingTide Boxing opened for business at 144 Main St. in Thomaston Aug. 28. The gym is owned and operated by Laurie Gold, known as LG.

Gold has more than 20 years of experience in the sport, and previously owned a boxing gym in Portland, Ore., named Sweet Science Boxing.

That gym closed in Aug. 2020. Gold moved to Maine, where she started working at MaineStay Media, based out of Camden, managing circulation for the newspapers.

Gold said she found herself frustrated with the lack of boxing resources in the area. When she saw the space at 144 Main St. was available, she decided to open her own gym. “It’s perfect,” she said.

She is aided by friend Lara Nixon, another boxer who will be teaching classes at RisingTide.

RisingTide offers fitness boxing rather than competitive boxing.

“It’s not about fighting; it’s about finesse,” said Gold.

“It’s a dance,” added Nixon.

Every day is a different workout combination, including mitt and glove partner work, bags and a duck rope. Gold wants her gym to be as open and accessible as possible, and said she hopes to build a community.

RisingTide also offers a low entrance fee for equipment and a whole body workout designed for fun and fitness.
