ROCKLAND — A local church in Rockland recently was revitalized, taking on a mission to show their faith in Christ to the local area and world.

Crossroads Church of the Nazarene has been part of the Rockland area for over 80 years.

Pastor Ayotunde Thompson from Lagos, Nigeria, is heading the new mission and vision of Crossroads Church of the Nazarene. Pastor Thompson, his wife, Rashell, a native Bath resident, and their two children, say they are excited to breathe life back into the historic church.

Pastor Thompson is currently working in a bi-vocational role and furthering his religious studies. Even with his home, work and school schedule, Pastor Thompson finds time to meet with people within the community to build solid relationships.

For the past 80 plus years, the current church building located at 50 Camden St. provided religious services to the Rockland area. In part of the last six years, a long-standing couple Rev. John and Fayelene Hawkins maintained the church through prayer and use of their time, treasures and talents. The heartbeat of the Hawkins was to ensure the Rockland community had a place to worship and build relationships.

In November 2020, the church was considered for closing, when Pastor Thompson stepped up to take on the challenge.

“My vision is to grow a church of mission-minded people,” says Pastor Thompson. Thompson said he has a relaxed, “come as you are atmosphere” and believes that no experience is wasted with God.

Since Pastor Thompson stepped in, the church saw an increase in attendance. Pastor Thompson plans to upgrade the church’s structural and digital components to serve the community more efficiently.

Currently, Crossroads Church of the Nazarene holds a Sunday morning service at 10:30 a.m., which can be viewed in person or on Facebook Live. Crossroads also hosts a Wednesday night Bible study starting at 6 p.m., both in person and on Facebook Live.

Revitalization efforts were made by Dr. Vincent Charron, who owns and operates TCM Leadership Group. “The purpose of TCM Leadership Group is to strengthen pastors and churches so they can reach the world.” said Charron.
