RICHMOND — The Oceanside boys soccer team had a successful end to its preseason with a strong showing at a high school tournament on Saturday, Aug. 28.

The Mariners finished second in the five-team event, which included Oak Hill of Sabattus, two teams from Oxford Hills of South Paris and the host Bobcats.

Richmond finished 4-0, Oceanside 2-1-1, Oak Hill 2-2, Oxford Hills ‘A’ 1-2-1 and Oxford Hills ‘B’ 0-4.

The Mariners defeated Oxford Hills ‘B’ 7-0 and Oak Hill 3-0 before falling 3-1 against Richmond and battling Oxford Hills ‘A’ to a 1-1 tie.

In the team’s 7-0 win over Oxford Hills ‘B,’ Alex Bartlett pumped in three goals to lead the Mariners, while Quinten Kruger, Harrison Garcia, Hayden Jacques and Melvin Sermeno netted one. Isaiah Meklin got the shutout in net, while “Liam Porter had a huge defensive effort as well as Ben Tripp and Noah Toss controlling the midfield,” said Mariner coach Travis Doughty.

In the Oak Hill game, Garcia netted two goals and Bartlett one, while Meklin again got the shutout in net.

Against Richmond, the Mariners fell behind 1-0 early after a Bobcat penalty kick before Garcia knotted the score after he tracked down a Tripp corner kick and buried it into the upper-90. However, the Bobcats scored two more goals to pull away. Meklin also saved a penalty kick in the loss for Oceanside.

In the Mariners’ 1-1 tie with Oxford Hills ‘A,’ the Vikings took an early lead but Oceanside “didn’t give up and finally scored midway through the second half of the game as Bartlett got into the open field with a pass from Jacques as he pushed it by the Oxford [Hills’] keeper,” said Doughty.

The first-year coach said “we will be prepared” with the regular season about to kick off.

“We are coming along nicely,” he said. “With only have one senior and the boys are buying into the system and perfecting the base values as we are moving on.”
