ROCKLAND — A bright blue lobster is on display at Jess’s Market on Main Street in Rockland.

The lobster was brought into the seafood market Aug. 24. Store employees said the lobster was caught in waters off Matinicus.

According to a 2019 statement, the Lobster Institute at the University of Maine said the odds of catching a blue lobster is one in two million.

The coloration comes from a genetic mutation that causes the lobster to produce an excessive amount of a particular protein, according to the Lobster Institute.

Jess’s Market said the lobster is not for sale, as it shares its space in a tank with the typical red lobsters.
