LIBERTY — Elizabeth D. Mayer (also known to many as “Betty Boop”), 88, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2021, with her family by her side.

She was a devoted wife and loving mother who enjoyed her family unconditionally. She was born in Huntington, N.Y., the daughter of Robert D. and Elizabeth Bartow. She grew up and went to school in Lindenhurst, N.Y.

She met the love of her life, Edward G. Mayer, on New Year’s Eve in 1955. They were married July 28, 1956.

Betty loved baking, especially her famous crumb cake and Christmas cookies, which she would take to her local bank during the holidays.  When she and her husband retired, they moved to Maine and started farming, raising cows, pigs, chickens and mini horses. They worked side by side through the years, never complaining and always having fun. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren; they always put a smile on her face.

For many years, she enjoyed volunteering with the Liberty Fire Department for the Fourth of July barbeque.

She is survived by her three children, daughter Deborah Porter and partner Tim of Washington, son Edward Mayer and his wife Lori, of Liberty, and son William Mayer of Liberty; grandchildren Danielle Mayer and her husband Silas Walsh of Waldo, Michael Mayer and his wife Britney of Thorndike, William Mayer of Liberty, Jason Porter and his wife Crystal of Palermo, Clarence Porter and his partner Shelby of Farmingdale; great-grandchildren Lucena-Ann Porter and Lincoln Mayer; brother Ken Bartow of Averill, N.Y., and sister Ann Steffens of Amityville, N.Y.

She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Edward G. Mayer; brothers Larry, Bob, Jimmy and sisters Dorothy, Francis and Sally.

We wish to extend many thanks to Sandra Edgecomb, who was her caregiver and angel for many months. Also, many thanks to the Westgate Manor and St. Joseph Hospice.
