THOMASTON — The preseason kicked off in a big way for the Oceanside boys high school soccer team on Tuesday, Aug. 24 at Pendleton Field as the Mariners sailed to a 6-1 victory over visiting Waterville.

“We came out ready to play,” said first-year Mariner coach Travis Doughty. “We were first to the ball and have really made some great strides.”

Melvin Sermano pumped in four goals to lead the Mariners, while Hayden Jacques and Alex Bartlett also creased the net in the win. Taygan McAllister also logged an assist for the hosts.

Oceanside led 5-0 at halftime, held a 28-5 edge in shots and 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.

“The thing that [assistant coach] Danny [Jacques] and I are most impressed with is how quickly the boys are buying into our program, our system and improving on the principal foundation that we have been taught from our mentor coach [Sam] Pendelton. It’s just a proven winner. If we continue to push ourselves, we really like our chances.”

Isaiah Meklin had the shutout in net for Oceanside.
