UNION — Aubrey Schaeffer of Union was named the 2021 Maine Wild Blueberry Ambassador at the Union Fair, Aug. 22.

Schaeffer will represent Maine and the blueberry industry at a variety of agricultural fairs and events, including The Big E agricultural exposition in Springfield, Mass.

She is a 2019 graduate of Medomak Valley High School and is currently attending Thomas College in Waterville. Schaeffer plans to complete her bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and then her master’s degree in criminology.

Schaeffer’s sponsor was Hart’s Clarry Hill Farm in Hope.

Abigail Cordts of Washington was named the runner-up.

Cordts is a 2020 graduate of Erskine Academy, and will attend Kennebec Valley Community College of Rockland. She plans to major in health information management.

Her sponsor was Brodis Blueberries in Hope.

The Maine Wild Blueberry Ambassador ceremony was held at 4 p.m. inside Blueberry Acres.

The four contestants took photos with family members and sponsors before the ceremony.

This is the first year of the competition for the title of Ambassador, which opened the qualifications to any person of the correct age. In prior years, the competition was the Maine Wild Blueberry Queen and only open to unmarried young women with no children.

Sharon Caron organized the event, with assistance from Brittany Payson, the reigning Miss Moxie.

The 2019 Blueberry Queen Shannon Hopkins and 2019 Crown Princess Erin Dugan were on hand for the ceremony, as well as about a dozen ambassadors from other Maine State Agricultural Fairs, including Sea Goddess Chloe Blake.

Mike Leonard of Union acted as the master of ceremonies.

The judges were Kat Pinkham of Waterville, Martha Johnston-Nash of Union and Donald Burke of Appleton.

The other Blueberry Ambassador candidates were Arianna Cloutier of Warren and Elaina Emerson of Damariscotta.

The Union Fair is open Aug. 21 to Aug. 28, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
