There were seven additional cases of COVID-19 in Knox County over the past day, the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported Aug. 20.

Neighboring Waldo County had eight additional cases over the past day, the CDC reported Aug. 20.

Since the pandemic began, 1,272 Knox County residents were diagnosed with the virus, 37 were admitted to hospitals and seven died.

Statewide, numbers continue to surge with an additional 185 cases in the past day. There was one additional death reported statewide on Aug. 20, increasing the number to 922. The death was a Penobscot County resident.

Four additional people statewide were hospitalized over the past day, increasing that number to 2,232 since the pandemic began in Maine in mid-March 2020.

Currently, 93 Mainers are hospitalized with the virus, 44 in critical care units and 19 are on respirators. This is the highest since the new wave of the Delta variant began.

The number of people vaccinated in Knox County has increased to 26,943, slightly more than 76 percent of the eligible population.

Health officials urge people to become vaccinated and to wear masks in indoor public places.
