Five more Knox County residents were diagnosed with COVID-19 over the past day, the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported Aug. 18.

Neighboring Waldo County had seven additional cases over the past day and one other person was admitted to a hospital, the CDC reported Aug. 18.

Since the pandemic began, 1,265 Knox County residents were diagnosed with the virus, 37 were admitted to hospitals and seven died.

Statewide, numbers continue to surge with an additional 191 cases in the past day. There were two additional deaths reported statewide on Aug. 18, increasing the number to 909. There was one death each in Aroostook and Washington counties. Eight additional people statewide were hospitalized in the past weekend, increasing that number to 2,221 since the pandemic began in Maine in mid-March 2020.

Currently, 84 Mainers are hospitalized with the virus, 45 in critical care units and 20 are on respirators. This is the highest since spring.

The CDC is recommending that residents in Knox and Waldo counties wear face coverings while inside public places. Local schools have announced that students, staffs and visitors will be required to wear masks while indoors.
