WASHINGTON — The “Washington Challenge” 5-kilometer road race and mile fun run took place on Sunday, Aug. 8, and a record for the new 3.1-mile course was set.

Gavin Wagner, 20, of Swedesboro, N.J., careened to the finish line first in 18:52. The second-place finisher was Jason Luce, 48, of Sebago.

Participants were offered a new, still challenging course over the hills of Washington after last year’s COVID-19-induced cancellation of the event. There was a warm sense of “old home week” and “how have you been?” among volunteers and runners, most of whom had not seen each other in two years.

The mile fun run attracted 10 participants from ages 3 to 68. Their course started at the town monument, took them up the hill to Prescott School, then back, and ended at the Gibbs Library.

Charlie Zarrow, 11, of Owls Head finished first in 7:49, followed by Luke Baker, 12, of Washington, who completed the run in 11:55.

There were nine runners, ages 20-80, in the 5K, an out-and-back race from the library, which ended with three steep hills on Bill Luce Road.

Participation included t-shirts for runners and medals for overall and age-group winners.

After the race, prizes ranged from gift certificates to local businesses and eateries to farm fresh eggs, maple syrup, fresh flowers, and homemade brownies were handed out.

Peg Hobbs, Washington Recreation committee chair and race director, commented: “It takes a village to put on an event like this,” and expressed gratitude for the people who helped. Volunteers and participants echoed their appreciation the town’s summertime ritual was back as good as ever.
