Two more Knox County resident were diagnosed with COVID-19 over the past day, the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported Aug. 7.

Neighboring Waldo County had 22 additional cases in the past day, the CDC reported Saturday.

No additional hospitalizations or deaths were reported for Knox County residents over the past day or week. Since the pandemic began, 1,212 Knox County residents were diagnosed with the virus, 36 were admitted to hospitals and seven died.

A total of 26,706 people in Knox County are fully vaccinated, amounting to 76% of the people eligible to receive the shots. This is an increase of 24 over the past day.

Statewide, an additional 165 cases of COVID-19 were reported over the past day with one additional death reported, a Cumberland County resident. This increased the statewide death toll to 901. Seven additional people statewide were hospitalized over the past day, increasing that number to 2,166 since the pandemic began.

Forty-four people are in hospitals currently across the state with 21 in critical care units and nine on ventilators.

Health officials say the rapid spread of the Delta variant is being worsened by the failure of more people to be vaccinated.
