FRIENDSHIP — Runners and walkers who turned out for the Friendship Day “Short” and “Long Haul” races on Saturday, July 31 were met with more autumn-like weather than that typical for summer.

Despite the sunny skies, the air was brisk, which, for runners, was ideal.

After being canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic, the 28th annual Friendship Day 5K race and children’s one-mile fun run returned to kick off the day of festivities for the town.

The “Short Haul,” for runners in eighth grade or younger, set out first for a mile long run from the church, through town and looping back.

The “Long Haul” set out about a half-hour after. Thirty-seven people finished the 5K distance.

Unlike with the previous “Long Haul” races, which were timed the old-fashioned way, namely, by hand, and placed on a finishers’ board, this year, the race was timed by Run In A Race, timed digitally.

Which proved to be quite handy with finishers Kyle Benner, and Corey Benner, who crossed the line virtually together. Timing showed Kyle Benner finished at 22.11.06, and Corey Benner at 22.11.12.

Daniel Bubar, 23, was the race winner, coming in first with a time of 19:27 over the 3.1-mile course.

Olivia Parent, 18, was the first female finisher, as she placed fourth with a time of 21:07.

Bubar and Parent are former standout distance runners for Medomak Valley High School in Waldoboro.

Prizes were awarded to the first male and female finishers of the 5K race in each age group. For the fastest male and female racers overall, 10 pounds of lobster were the tasty prize.
